The most immediate precedent of the Aquarium is a celebrated exhibition San Sebastian in the year 1914, one of the principal attractions was precisely the aquarium that put the SOG in the former one sedate of the society. The new airs that were running at the beginning of century, used as spur to stimulate the scientific labor of this Entity without spirit of profit, with the putting in march of numerous activities as the School of Fishing, scientific publications, production of documentary movies - labor in which the Society is pioneering - and up to welfare initiatives for the fishermen and his(her,your) families, in a few times in which one was lacking the welfare coverage that exists at present.     

 Construction of her(it) sedates of the current Aquarium it(he,she) began in 1925 in the end of the fishing port of Donostia, just person when the New Walk had just be inaugurated. Three years later, it(he,she) was opening the doors the emblematic building designed by Juan Carlos Guerra who has been traditionally the attraction most visited of the city and who has been visited along his(her,your) history by almost 12 million persons.

Since the Society of Gipuzkoa's Oceanography was founded in 1908, this entity has stimulated numerous projects that go beyond the mere exhibition of the marine life. With the years the modern society has been giving response to many of these needs, though the SOG of nowadays and with her(it) his(her,your) Aquarium, it(he,she) continues keeping the divulgative zeal, his(her,your) commitment alive(vivacious) towards the scientific advance and his(her,your) bet decided towards the sensitization on the environmental problems.

In a context marked by continuous changes, the Aquarium has decided to bring together in his(her,your) daily task two elements that form a part of his(her,your) own(proper) identity: the deep rooting, as Aquarium of Basque Country, to his(her,your) own(proper) environment, and the vocation of continuing advancing towards the conquest of new challenges on the base of the quality in the service, the permanent training, the adjustment to the technological advances and the permeability to the new ideas.

In 1998, there was inaugurated the extension of the Aquarium that supposed a point of inflexion in his(her,your) path. Beside extending the space with services and spectacular facilities - between(among) that it is necessary to emphasize the tank of 1.800.000 liters of water crossed by a tunnel-, this remodeling served to stimulate definitively the mission of the Entity.

In the year 2002, the SOG created the Foundation Oceanográfica of Guipuzcoa (FOG) in order to contribute a major solidity to his(her,your) future. The FOG has assumed and promoted the Mission and Vision of the SOG. 
In this moment, the Entity is immersed in the project that will allow him(her) to remodel completely his(her,your) facilities.
